VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS (high quality recommended) :

My internship in Napier involved a high speed police chase, coming face to face with NZ’s only crocodile (Izzy), writing 25 stories and getting the front page lead in the Napier Courier.

It has been an eventful two weeks for me. Apart from seeing family and enjoying all the comforts of being in my home town, I was enlisted as an intern at Napier’s daily paper, the Hawke’s Bay Today.

I settled in to the Napier office to work on the community papers. I was amazed at my colleagues experience and skill in producing stories – true journos, all of them. They took me under their wings and soon enough I was producing a few stories each day – a big step up from my usual one story per week..

On the first night I was there I witnessed a police chase through the streets. It went on for about half an hour, so I decided to get out front of my house with my camera, and voila, caught it on camera (see video).

I was also sent to do a profile piece on the National Aquarium of New Zealand- complete with a behind the scenes tour. This involved going into the feeding area for NZ’s only crocodile. The look of hunger in that reptiles eyes as it peered through the small fence which separated us by only a few feet was enough to ensure I didn’t attempt to capture any video or photos of it. I’ve seen them from a distance before at Australia Zoo, but never that close. Amazing.

For kicks, me and my two crazy sisters went along to Blues, Brews and BBQ’sat the HB Showgrounds. Great day, super hot, and I got some cool photos (I put it down to the willingness of revellers due to my conspicuously displayed press pass). Unfortunately, the HB Today went to print before anyone was willing to look at my shots.

The lead for the Courier was a story on Trainworld, and how this iconic Napier attraction, home of the Lilliput model railway, is in serious trouble and needs volunteers. It’s due to be published in the Napier Courier on January 28.

I also took a few panoramic shots around the bay, one from Bluff Hill lookout, one out over Napier city and one of the Blues, Brews and BBQ’s event. I’ve thrown them into this post so check them out but be patient, they’re a little big, but worth it.
